Bayer Leverkusen's 2011-12 away shirt by adidas pairs a white base with red shoulder stripes and a red-trimmed neckline. Pale contrasting panels run down the sides and form a band across the chest, framing the black SunPower sponsor panel. The adidas logo and Bayer crest sit above it, while the back keeps a largely uninterrupted white finish. These restrained details give the shirt a different character from Leverkusen's familiar red and black home colours.

The 2011-12 season brought Bayer back to the Champions League after six years away. Victories over Genk, Valencia and Chelsea helped the club reach the round of 16. SunPower also became the main shirt sponsor at the start of the campaign, making its chest logo a specific marker of this period.
